Health Insurance

There were a number of changes to the health insurance market that took place 1/1/14. These changes affect the way you can shop for health insurance, the benefits that will be available, and the cost of the coverage as well as help paying for health insurance.  At Fort Dearborn Insurance we are here to help make health insurance easy to shop for and easy to understand.

Common Types of Health Insurance

  • Health Maintenance Organization (HMO): A HMO is a type of insurance plan that gives you access to certain doctors and hospitals within its network.* All treatment must be coordinated through your primary care physician and you usually need a referral from your primary care physician to visit a specialist.  This is one of the most restrictive plans, but has lower upfront cost than other types of plans.
  • Preferred Provider Organization (PPO): The PPO Insurance plan also features a network of providers, but there are fewer restrictions when picking a doctor or hospital and you don’t always need a referral to see a specialist. The PPO plans generally have a deductible and may have somewhat higher out-of-pocket costs than an HMO, but it also provides more options.
  • Point of Service Organization (POS): These insurance plans give you a choice of getting care within or outside of a provider network. With POS plans, you may use out-of-network providers and facilities, but you’ll have to pay more than if you use in-network ones. With a POS plan, you can also visit any in-network provider without a referral, but you’ll need a referral to visit an out-of-network provider.

* A network is a list of doctors, hospitals, and other health care providers that provide medical care to members of a specific health plan.

Not every available health plan is listed above. There are other plans available for you to consider. Choosing the right individual health insurance plan is no easy matter. Different types of health insurance plans meet different needs. Let us help you understand all your health insurance options. Contact us at 847.853.5300.
